Fall 2011 Retreats
A Quiet Day in the Quiet Garden
Join us at the beginning of the month as we take time to slow the pace and enjoy a quiet place to pause and let our bodies and minds rest and our hearts awaken. We begin at 10:00 am with an opening meditation and gather again at 2:45 pm for a closing circle. The in between time is intentionally unstructured to allow each person time and space to do what is most nurturing whether is it expressing with creative materials, reflecting, praying or meditating in the outdoor chapel or the labyrinth garden, enjoying one of the many gardens and natural area, reading or even napping.

Spiritual Alchemy: An Enneagram Wisdom Circle
The Enneagram is a tool of mystical wisdom that helps us identify our compulsions (a.k.a. vices or dark passions), and our gifts (a.k.a. virtues or graces). Suzanne Zuercher’s Enneagram Spirituality: From Compulsion to Contemplation offers a good organizer for exploring the three basic spiritual pathways into which the nine enneagram types are divided and how they help us grow in wisdom as we grow in self-awareness.
Led by Dee Irwin, Enneagram teacher, spiritual director and retreat leader.
Wednesdays, 9-11:30am,September 7 - November 23 (no class October 26).
Suggested donation: $100

Close to the Bone: A Wisdom Circle for significant conversations
When critical physical or mental illness strike or we face catastrophic loss, we find ourselves stripping away the inessentials and confronting those issues that are “close to the bone.” This is true whether it happens to us or to someone we love. Healing and recovery require a connection to our soul as well as medical or psychological expertise, an examination of our attitudes and beliefs about who we are, why we are here, and what really matters. Jean Shinoda Bolen’s Close to the Bone: Life-Threatening Illness and the Search for Meaning invites us into significant, honest conversations with those we love and with ourselves about soul shaking events that are ultimately life-affirming.
Led by Dee Irwin, a spiritual director and retreat leader who is currently dealing with a recurrence of cancer that has metastasized to the bone.
7 Mondays 6:30-8:30pm, September 12, 26, October 10, 17, 31, November 14, 28.
Suggested donation: $80
Space is limited to 15.
A New Earth Study Group for Men
There is abundant data available now that football and some other sports have had serious side effects on men, leading to an increase in development of brain trauma and other negative health consequences. The underlying competitiveness with which we men approach business and our professions also has many downsides to all of us, athletes or not. Thus, we tend to approach leadership challenges and our life transitions in the same spirit, with a do-or-die attitude, pleasing our managers, coaches or whomever as we miss the most important developmental opportunities of our lives. Come and explore these and other issues that cause us heartache and serious regrets through a shared reading of A New Earth by Eckhart Tolle. Plus, through various kinds of meditation, discover the antidotes by developing a practice that not only fits for you and your very busy life, but also helps you discover how to increase your brain power and your longevity.
Led by Kevin Haggerty, teacher, counselor, executive coach, consultant for former Farr Associates. Kevin’s life goal is to help people understand that their purpose in life is to be happy through self-awareness and to share that happiness with their families, friends and community. For further information, call Kevin at (336) 509-5777.
Six Tuesday Evenings 7-9:30pm September 13, 20, 27, October 18, 25 and November 1.

Advent Retreat at St. Francis Spring Prayer Center, Stoneville, NC
It is Healing Ground’s tradition to invite folks to start the advent season with some contemplative time in preparation for the coming of the Christ child. It seems to make a tremendous difference in how we progress through our entire holiday season. We found St. Francis Spring Prayer Center so inviting last year, that we booked the entire facility for the weekend ahead of their traditional Taize advent service. Please join us for two nights in their very gracious accommodations that include six meals and will conclude with a Taize program at 3pm on Sunday and then dinner before we leave. We will gather at 7pm on Friday night with light snacks and have an opening circle to deepen our time of waiting for the Prince of Peace.
Pat Bailey and Dee Irwin invite you to join them for this special event. Register early as we expect that the space will go very quickly.
Friday, December 2 through Sunday, December 4, ending with Taize Service and Dinner
Cost is $125 — all inclusive of accommodations, meals, and activities with double occupancy. Limited single occupancy is available for an additional $25.
Fire in the Voice
A New Year's Eve Celebration
Join Jacinta V. White, of The Word Project, as she leads us in our 3rd annual poetry workshop celebrating the close
of a year and the beginning of a new one, Saturday, December 31, 2011, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon (potluck at
noon) at Healing Ground.
We will explore the works of renowned and acclaimed Latin-American poet Pablo Neruda (1923-1973), looking at his use of “fire” and how we can apply that symbolism—along with the symbolism of water, voice and silence— to our own life. We will read, share, discuss, write, fellowship, and be renewed! Bring a journal or a notebook, and a dish or beverage for the potluck to follow. A love donation is appreciated. No poetry writing experience is necessary to participate.
Click here for a PDF flyer for this event. The suggested Love Offerings are just that—suggestions. We welcome you at any retreat for any amount you may wish to give. Scholarships are always available and we welcome barters or work exchanges if you would like to trade your time and talent for a retreat offering or a personal retreat. If you are financially blessed, you may want to sponsor someone who is blessed in other ways.
